Maori first European encounter
It was a fine day on Aotearoa when the Moari saw huge ships sailing towards their island. The captain of the ship and the first European to arrive in New Zealand was a Dutch explorer Abel Tasman who arrived in Aotearoa in 1642. He first called the island Nouveau Zealandia, but he soon left. After so many years another explorer arrived in New Zealand his name was James Cook he arrived in 1769. James Cook introduced lots of stuff to the Moari like animals, fruits and vegetables. James unfortunately died during a fight. The Moari soon traded their animals, vegetables and fruit for muskets, alcohol and other tools. A musket is a very old gun. The musket wars broke out and they started killing each other with muskets. Finally the musket war ended at 1830.
